Reading lists
Description of reading list work item.
The reading list tool will support the re-use of subject gateway metadata records by enabling their inclusion in reading lists compiled by lecturers (or other users). The reading list tool will import gateway records (the results generated from a search is an example of a list of records) and export them to a format that can be used to prepare a reading list.
In the first phase, we will define a reading list as an ordered list of URLs, pointing to a resource or a subject gateway record; we will use RDN record identifiers to point to RDN resource description records. The lists will be exported as an RSS feed that could then be fed into other web pages, such as an institutional page.
In phase 2, we will define an interface for importing results from subject gateways, that may specify for example, a format that the records need to comply with to be imported into the tool. We will research existing standardised formats (such as the OAI XML schema) that could be adopted for this purpose, and investigate other forms of export other than RSS. This work item will include some study in further defining the requirements for the tool. The compiler of the list may wish to add notes or directions on the use of the list items, or perhaps add other sources (such as a book from the library catalogue) to the list of gateway records, or delete some of the records in a result set.
