| Examples of use |
The 24 hour museum |
| Purpose |
A toolset for the creation, development, management and
exploitation of text and multimedia assets, with web and internet
facilities. |
| Approach |
The components are implemented as separate modules with
clearly defined interfaces and functions. They can be integrated
with third party hardware and software products. |
| Platform and requirements |
Can be used on Unix, MS-Windows, NT and mixed
environments. |
| Components and their
technology |
|
| Server |
The web gateway links to any standard web server, enabling
access to the information via a standard Web browser. The
database server responds to any client using the Z39.50 protocol.
It can handle multiple databases. Supports full-text and numeric
searching. |
| Database |
The system does not have facilities for incorporating
proprietary databases (this has been promised). The database as
provided by the system is scalable and not limited in size
(except by other factors external to the software such as space
available on storage devices). The database can be re-structured,
copied and customised; it is portable between platforms. |
| Search tools/clients |
Clients for GUI and character terminal environments are
provided. Configuration tools for designing and building client
interfaces are available. |
| API |
For the basic services, interfaces are available in C. For
higher level capabilities interfaces in C, C++, Visual Basic and
IPI are provided. The system is written in C, C++. |
| Metadata Formats |
The system is designed to cater for a wide range of data
formats - unstructured text, data, still and moving images. It is
not particularly specialised for metadata. |
| Extras/Other features |
Utilities for the server for database configuration and
management are available. |
