Purpose A toolkit for management of distributed library resources, within a world wide web environment, including tools for presenting resources through one Web interface, providing flexible access and building local databases.
Approach Two main components, Database Builder and WebZ provide the funcitionality. Database Builder handles the building and managing of local databases. WebZ includes the components for controlling access and retrieval functionality based on Z39.50 and Web access.
Platform and requirements WebZ runs on Microsoft Windows NT and Unix. Detailed systems and supporting software requirements are published on the website.
Components and their technology
Server WebZ provides both the Web gateway and the Z39.50 server. The web gateway works with standard HTTP servers. Web-based access is provided through HTML-and-Java based interfaces, via the JaSSI component of WebZ. For databases built with DatabaseBuilder, WebZ includes java classes to make them available to any Z39.50 client. Multidatabase searching and browsing is supported.
Database DatabaseBuilder provides a set of tools for managing and building a local database. Record creation and editing can be made via a web interface. It is used in conjunction with conjunction with WebZ. The Database Operations Tools can be used for administration of the database. The database is unlimited in size.
Search tools/clients The ZBase component of the WebZ package manages client connections to any local and remote server compliant with Z39.50. ZBase also uses Java programming to provide searching of non-Z3950 resources by translating Z39.50 requests to the native search language. A published API for the non-Z39.50 resource is required to configure WebZ to do this. Web interfaces can be customized.`
API
Metadata Formats Data conversion tools can convert MARC, SGML to the format of data stored internally (ASN.1/BER).
Extras/Other features Authentication can be supported by providing an SQL database package for the authentication database. This connects with WebZ via JDBC or JDBC-ODBC bridge (included in WebZ).
Customizable web-accesible interfaces.
